Understanding God's Promise

In John 10:4, Jesus refers to Himself as the shepherd and His followers as His sheep. He assures us that His sheep can hear and recognize His voice, while ignoring the voice of a stranger. This promise establishes the foundation for our ability to hear God's voice.

Recognizing God's Still Small Voice

In 1 Kings 19:12, we learn about Elijah's encounter with God. Despite the whirlwind, fire, and earthquake, Elijah hears God's voice as a still small voice. This highlights the common nature of God's communication with us. His voice often comes as a gentle whisper or a thought in our minds.

TURN OFF the Noise

To hear God more clearly, we must learn to turn off the noise and distractions in our lives. This includes putting away our devices, avoiding constant stimulation, and creating moments of silence. By intentionally tuning out the external noise, we create space for God's voice to be heard.

Ways God Speaks to Us

1. Audible Voice: While rare, some individuals have experienced hearing God's voice audibly, similar to Moses and the burning bush.

2. Still Small Voice: The most common way God speaks to us is through a gentle impression or thought in our minds.

3. Thoughts: God often communicates through thoughts that align with His wisdom, love, and character.

4. Images: God can reveal messages through images or visions in our minds, which may require interpretation.

5. Open Visions: Although less common, some individuals may experience vivid, detailed visions of the spiritual realm.
6. Dreams: God frequently speaks through dreams, providing guidance, warnings, or prophetic insights.

7. God's Word: The Bible serves as a primary means of communication, allowing us to understand God's general will and receive specific guidance through specific verses.

8. Community: Fellow believers can confirm and provide insight into the messages we receive from God.

9. Journaling: Maintaining a journal helps us record and reflect on what God is speaking to us, allowing us to track His faithfulness over time.

10. Worship: Engaging in worship, whether through music or personal expression, creates an atmosphere where God's voice can be heard more clearly.

Discerning God's Voice

To discern whether it is God speaking to us, we can employ several methods:

1. Confirm with Scripture: Compare the message received with the teachings and principles found in the Bible.
2. Seek Confirmation from Christian Community: Share the message with trusted believers who can provide insight and confirmation.
3. Time: Observe whether the message aligns with God's will and if it comes to pass over time.
4. Test the Spirits: Ask the question, "Did Jesus Christ come in the flesh?" If the response is aligned with biblical truth, it is likely from God.

Conclusion

Developing the ability to hear God's voice is essential for deepening our relationship with Him. By silencing the noise, practicing discernment, and engaging in the above spiritual disciplines, we can cultivate a more intimate connection with God. Remember, God desires to communicate with us, and as we actively listen, we can experience His guidance, love, and purpose in our lives.
